Skateboard help pleasee?

Ive been wanting to skate all my life and never have. Ive always looked up to people like Ryan shecckler and Rob Dyrdek and Eric Koston and P-Rod. I'm 13 so I thought I am too old to start because there are kids in my school who have been doin it since they were 7. But recently I learned that Rob started when he was 12 so that gave me hope. Do you think I have a chance of getting anywhere if I did start? Also My parents are very overprotective and think that only high school dropouts skate (I'm pretty smart, my parents want me to go to med school) I don't even know if they'd let me get one. PLease help D:
