Watchmen ending...........?

It was a great ending , but did anyone else feel like it was quite nieve. I mean considering that the guy was the smartest an on earth , he should of realised global destruction was imminent , once they discovered Dr manhatten was gone , they wouldve once again turned on eachother in a nuclear war for power. Im sorry if i seem condescending towards it , this is jst my view
